Deputy Managing Editor, Journal of Interventional Epidemiology and Public Health and Scientific Writing Lead, African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET)
Dr Chukwuma Umeokonkwo is the Deputy Managing Editor, Journal of Interventional Epidemiology and Public Health, and Scientific Writing Lead at the African Field Epidemiology Network, Secretariat, Kampala, Uganda, where he manages the journal’s strategic growth, shapes scientific communication and research across the AFENET network. His work has improved the journal’s global recognition and operational efficiency.
Dr Chukwuma is a Consultant Community Physician, Fellow of the West African College of Physicians, field epidemiologist and a prolific writer with an interest in infectious disease epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance and one health. He has over 100 publications in high-impact peer-reviewed international journals. He has led outbreak response in complex humanitarian conditions and is involved in training and mentoring FETP trainees, undergraduates and postgraduate medical students.
As Senior Technical Officer, Office of the Director, AFENET, between 2022 and 2024, he played a role in nurturing a platform for organisational learning and experience sharing in the AFENET network. He also served as Technical Coordinator and Scientific Writer, a role that saw him actively engaged in training and mentoring FETP trainees and graduates on scientific communication, supporting the Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institutes in strengthening their research capabilities and outputs in Nigeria, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Gambia, Togo, Namibia, Ghana and Uganda.
